Born in Rantoul, Illinois, Vaughn Collar spent his early years in Arkansas and his teens in British Columbia. Living in Mexico briefly, his writings sometimes reflect his experiences. His love of history also influences his work as does his desire to care for the environment. The idea for The Rift came from passing a small undeveloped plot of land. An avid D&D player during his youth, he imagined this area populated with exotic creatures, wondering what life would be like, thus creating the foundation for this story. Beginnings is Vaughn’s debut novel, the first in the series.

Children born with special powers and unbelievable facial characteristics suddenly appear across the globe. As scientists and officials search for an answer, only one event could explain the unusual DNA mutations – a reactor that was to solve the world’s energy crises. Unfortunately, instead of a new, clean power, the world experienced an explosion that rocked the human race. The Rift follows college professors, Lucian and Ian, who were molded from different cultures but awakened with new gifts. A power they must silently explore, carefully. Wanting to better the world, they slowly unravel an anomaly that can only be described as magic.
Neither knows of the other. Although, they expect there must be more who can wield magic. As the world learns how to live with mosquitoes as large as a human hand or monkeys that can reason, Lucian and Ian must live without revealing their secret. A secret that would place them inside the forbidden walls of the world’s darkest moments.
Vaughn’s debut novel, Beginnings, re-awakens a world hidden for centuries. Book one in The Rift sends the reader through ancient ruins, unravels lost languages long since sealed from time, and walks the halls once owned by Vlad the Impaler better known as Dracula. What ancient and evil magic did the people seal away, only to have it re-awaken by The Rift? Can Lucian and Ian rebury what was released before it is too late?
